A recurrence occurs when cancer comes back after treatment.
This can happen weeks, months, or even years after the primary or original cancer was treated!
Cancer may recur in the following ways:
• Local Recurrence: In the same part of the body as primary cancer.
• Regional Recurrence: Near where the primary cancer was located.
• Distant Recurrence: In another part of the body.
The likelihood that a relapse would occur is that a few of the original cancer cells survived the initial treatment. Sometimes, this is because cancer cells spread to other parts of the body and were too small to be detected during the follow-up immediately after treatment.
